Real Madrid's Pepe struggling with calf issue

Real Madrid defender Pepe will have a longer winter break after his club revealed that he's carrying a Grade 2 injury to the inner calf muscle on his left leg, and will continue being assessed by medical staff.

The setback comes not long after Pepe returned from a four-match absence in December after overcoming a hamstring complaint.

Los Blancos return to action on Wednesday when Sevilla visits in the first leg of their Copa del Rey Round of 16 double-header, and in Pepe's stead the centre-back pairing is likely to be captain Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

Pepe's contract winds down in the Spanish capital this summer, and the 33-year-old Portugal international has been touted by ESPN FC's Arindam Rej for a move to Manchester United, amid reports that Pepe is a subject of interest from the cash-rich Chinese Super League.
