Manchester City pair Maffeo, Angelino off to Girona on loan

Budding Manchester City defenders Pablo Maffeo and Angelino will join Spanish second-tier side Girona when the transfer window officially opens on Jan. 1.

City announced the moves with a statement on its website Tuesday, adding that the Spanish pair - Maffeo, 19, and Angelino, 19 - will stay with the Segunda Division side until the end of the season.

It's familiar territory for Maffeo after a meteoric rise through City's youth set-up saw the right-back play 13 times for Girona last season.

He's since featured three times this campaign for Pep Guardiola's lot, with a run-out in the League Cup against rival Manchester United paired with two appearances in the Champions League versus Steaua Bucharest and Celtic.

Maffeo's agent and Guardiola's brother, Pere, is a shareholder at Girona and also represents the Spanish club's sporting director, Quique Carcel.

Like Maffeo, Angelino is a full-back who's no stranger to a loan switch. The left-back spent time with City's MLS side New York City FC in 2015, making 14 appearances after his bow as a substitute in a 4-4 draw with Toronto FC on July 12.

Angelino also made two appearances for his parent club this season, with one coming opposite Maffeo against Steaua in the Champions League, and the other in a League Cup victory over Swansea City when he came on in the 58th minute for Kevin De Bruyne.

Both players will rejoin City in the summer, with Girona first hoping the pair can help buoy its promotion hopes. The side currently sits second in the Segunda Division, four points adrift of leader Levante.
