Atlanta United announced Wednesday the club has signed free-agent winger Jacob Peterson to a multi-year deal after the 30-year-old saw out his contract with Sporting Kansas City.

"We set clear goals during this offseason to add league experience in key areas," Atlanta president Darren Eales said in a club-issued statement. "Jacob is another player who's enjoyed a long and productive career in MLS and we're pleased that he's decided to sign with our club."

"His work rate and versatility stood out to us from the beginning," club technical director Carlos Bocanegra added. "Coupled with his extensive experience, Jacob also brings a great attitude to work every day and it will be a positive addition to the locker room."

Peterson is an 11-year veteran of MLS and joins Atlanta after spending the last four years with Sporting KC; he has also played for the San Jose Earthquakes, Toronto FC, and the Colorado Rapids, making a combined 254 appearances in MLS regular-season and playoff action.

In that time, Peterson has notched 22 goals and recorded 17 assists, including six goals last year with Sporting KC, his career best.

Atlanta United is one of two expansion franchises entering the league in the 2017 season.
