D.C. United announced Tuesday the club has acquired Costa Rican forward Jose Guillermo Ortiz on loan from CS Herediano in a deal that also includes a purchase option at the end of the 2017 MLS season.

Ortiz, 24, spent the last three seasons with Alajuelense before signing with Herediano earlier in the week. His new outfit immediately struck a deal with D.C. United to send him on loan and gather a potential transfer fee at the end of next season as well.

Last season, Ortiz scored 15 goals for Alajuelense, and D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper says he is quite happy with the signing.

"Jose is coming off a very good year in 2016 and we are very pleased to have secured his services in a one-year loan," Kasper said in a club-issued statement. "His energy and movement create problems for opposing defenses, and he has a nose for the goal.

"We welcome Jose to the D.C. United family and we look forward to having him joining us in preseason training camp in January."
