Report: Indians making offers to right-handed power bats
After coming oh, so close, to defeating the Chicago Cubs in the World Series last season, the Cleveland Indians have been relatively quiet throughout the offseason thus far.
They've mainly claimed players off waivers or agreed to minor-league deals with others, but that may be window dressing as the team prepares to add a powerful hitter to their everyday lineup.
The Indians are making offers to right-handed power bats and are seeking a steal of a deal, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.
This particular strategy worked out well for the Indians last season when they waited out the market and signed slugger Mike Napoli to an affordable one-year deal worth $7 million. Napoli went on to provide Cleveland with 34 home runs and 101 RBIs.
The free-agent crop of right-handed power hitters is still plentiful, so the Indians could potentially have their fair share to choose from, including Napoli, Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, Mark Trumbo, and Chris Carter.
PLAYER | HR | RBI | SLG | ISO |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mike Napoli | 34 | 101 | .465 | .226 |
Edwin Encarnacion | 42 | 127 | .529 | .266 |
Jose Bautista | 22 | 69 | .452 | .217 |
Mark Trumbo | 47 | 108 | .533 | .277 |
Chris Carter | 41 | 94 | .499 | .277 |
With the exception of Carter, all of the above-listed power hitters are reportedly seeking multi-year deals.
With Napoli in their lineup, Cleveland finished 10th in the American League in home runs last season with 185. Only Napoli, Carlos Santana (34), and Jason Kipnis (23) hit more than 20 long balls for the Indians.
