Expansion side Atlanta United looks to have the rock upon which Gerardo Martino's backline will be built - at least in the club's first season.

Michael Parkhurst is on his way to Atlanta, the Columbus Crew confirming their now-former captain has been traded in exchange for General Allocation Money (GAM).

The deal was completed during Sunday's Half-Day Trade Window.

"We want to thank Michael for his contributions on and off the field over the last three seasons with Crew SC," Columbus head coach Gregg Berhalter said.

"Michael served admirably as the club’s captain and his efforts as a part of the 2015 Eastern Conference Championship team will always have a place in Black & Gold history."

Parkhurst, 32, arrived in Columbus in 2014, wearing the captain's armband for three seasons as he marshaled the defense over 100 appearances.
