Jets' Bowles confirms Petty will start rest of season

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles confirmed Bryce Petty will start at quarterback for the remainder of the season, following Monday's 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Petty took over for Ryan Fitzpatrick on Monday, and Bowles said it was the team's plan all along to start the 25-year-old for the final four games.

"Barring injury, he'll play all four," Bowles said of Petty during his postgame press conference.

Petty went 11-of-25 for 135 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions against the Colts. Fitzpatrick was benched after going 5-of-12 for 81 yards and an interception.

Fitzpatrick told ESPN's Rich Cimini that he'll attempt to kick start Petty's career. The veteran was told Petty would become the team's starting quarterback after Monday's game.

Bowles was nonplussed by the team's performance, repeatedly stating that the Colts "kicked our ass."

Although Petty now takes over at the team's most important position, the quarterback wasn't pleased with his performance.

"To be honest, I didn't think I played up to my ability today," Petty said via Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday.

With Monday's loss, the Jets were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
