Atlanta United FC confirms Almiron signing

To the surprise of few, Atlanta United FC announced the signing of its new No. 10, with once-capped Paraguayan international Miguel Almiron joining Gerardo Martino's ranks ahead of the club's debut season in the North American top flight.

The MLS' 21st franchise announced the signing with a tweet Monday afternoon, welcoming the Lanus attacking midfielder to the club amid a spree of signings.

After Atlanta released video of a home strip getting printed with the No. 10 on Saturday, supporters with a discerning eye caught a glimpse of Almiron's name. That poorly-orchestrated secret, paired with Almiron's attendance at Sunday's Atlanta Falcons game, all but confirmed the signing.

Almiron, 22, joins Atlanta on a multi-year deal as a Young Designated Player. As per MLS policy, additional terms of the signing were not disclosed.

"Our club’s ambition is to acquire quality players heading into their peak playing years and Miguel’s youth and ability absolutely speak to that," club president Darren Eales told Atlanta's official website.

"He’s highly regarded as one of the top young players in South America and we couldn’t be happier that he has chosen to continue his already impressive career here in Atlanta."

An attacking midfielder capable of taking up a central role or one on the wings, Almiron got his first senior cap during Paraguay's World Cup qualifying campaign, making a start in a crucial 1-0 defeat of Argentina on Oct. 11.

Martino, who bossed Argentina until stepping down in June, may have caught wind of Almiron's international exploits from his La Albiceleste successor, Edgardo Bauza.

Almiron becomes Atlanta's second Young Designated Player, joining former Lanus teammate Hector "Tito" Villalba, and is the club's tenth signing overall.
