Guardiola: 'We created more chances than against Palace and Burnley'

Pep Guardiola has bemoaned his Manchester City side's indiscipline but praised its attacking play as Chelsea took a 3-1 win from the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

For much of the match, City mirrored Chelsea's 3-4-3 system but had greater success, making numerous ventures down the right, but sensational counter-attacking and well-drilled defending from the visitor meant Antonio Conte's lot stayed top of the Premier League.

And in the final seconds it descended into chaos, with Sergio Aguero's disgraceful challenge on David Luiz garnering a red card from referee Anthony Taylor, and Fernandinho promptly following him into the dressing room following a scuffle with Cesc Fabregas.

"Congratulations Chelsea, I'm so proud how we played. We created more chances than against Palace and Burnley," Guardiola reflected at the post-match press conference.

"I don't have regrets. We lost, I'm sorry but we don't have regrets."

The 2-1 triumphs over Palace and Burnley yielded a collective six shots on target - the same amount engineered in the weekend wrangle with Chelsea.

The way the occasion spilled over at the end will irk Guardiola. Aguero could miss four matches for his tackle due to already being banned for three games earlier this season, and Fernandinho will likely sit out three outings. It's inconvenient timing, as the club begins to tick off dates in the busy festive calendar.

"It's a pity it finished like this (full time incidents), I don't like that. I apologise for what happened," Guardiola continued.

He then added on what seemed like the official Taylor's disinclination to make a big decision: "We didn't win because we missed a lot of chances, not because of the referee."

City now has to round off its Champions League group commitments against Celtic on Tuesday, before travelling to disjointed Premier League champion Leicester City next Saturday.
