Vertonghen extends Spurs deal until 2019
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen became the 10th Spurs player to sign a new contract with the club Friday, extending his deal a further year until 2019.
Twenty-four hours after leading striker Harry Kane renewed his agreement, Vertonghen did the same and erased any doubt over his future. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris now remains the final obstacle for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has managed to tie down the majority of his star players in the space of just a few months.
"This is probably the strongest squad that I've ever played in," the Belgium international told Spurs TV. "I can't imagine playing anywhere else."
Vertonghen has developed into one of the Premier League's most consistent defenders, making more than 150 appearances for Tottenham since joining the club from Ajax in 2012.
He helped his team put together the Premier League's best defensive record last season, as it jostled for the crown with eventual champion Leicester City.
Forming a strong partnership with countryman Toby Alderweireld, Vertonghen is the man tasked with keeping things tidy at the back. He ranked in the Premier League's top 10 in clearances, interceptions, and successful passes during the 2015-16 campaign.
