St-Pierre: 'We have very strong evidence that I'm a free agent'

Georges St-Pierre knows his fight with the UFC has just begun.

During a conference call Wednesday to announce the formation of the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association, GSP fielded questions about his ongoing dispute with the organization, over whether or not he's currently a free agent.

The former welterweight champion has employed famed New York lawyer James Quinn to handle his case. Quinn has taken on the NBA and NFL, giving St-Pierre complete faith in his ability to unearth the facts needed to extricate the fighter from his UFC contract.

"My lawyer - he's the best in this kind of situation - he told me I'm a free agent," St-Pierre said, according to MMA Fighting's Marc Raimondi. "So I am a free agent from my side of the situation. We have very strong evidence that I'm a free agent. Very confident. That's all I can say."

Little is known about details of UFC contracts, though Quinn previously said he was shocked by how one-sided they were in favor of the promotion, describing the deal as "a pretty nice form of slavery."

St-Pierre couldn't divulge much further information, as signs seem to be pointing to he and his team being involved in litigation with the UFC in the near future.

"I have to be very careful of how I'm going to answer this question, because it can be used in court," St-Pierre said. "My lawyer James Quinn told me I'm a free agent. But you know how it is. There's two sides of the situation and sometimes it could be in court. That's all I can say."

The 35-year-old fighter has not competed since a split decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 on Nov. 16, 2013. He's never described his hiatus as a retirement, and earlier this year announced his intention to return to active competition.
