5 ridiculous numbers from the defense-free record-setting Pitt-Syracuse shootout

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

If you like points and are looking for a team to support, buy yourself some Pitt Panthers gear, because Pat Narduzzi is your guy.

The Panthers rolled up a ridiculous 76-61 win Saturday over Syracuse, combining with the Orange for an incredible 137 points.

Here are five amazing stats from the shootout in the ACC:

59

Pitt put forth one of the most efficient offensive performances in the history of football, scoring 76 points despite running just 59 plays, meaning the Panthers were - incredibly - scoring 1.28 points per play.

137

The combined point total of 137 represents the highest ever in a FBS game. To put that number in perspective, the Syracuse and Pitt basketball teams played three times last year, and only one of those contests featured a point total over 137. Pitt won all three matchups without reaching the 76-point mark.

1,312

The teams' combined yardage was a fairly shocking 1,312, but that's not even the highest total this year. Texas Tech and Oklahoma combined for an insane 1,708 yards earlier this season.

9

Pitt scored 76 points and yet, somehow, quarterback Nathan Peterman only completed nine passes. The senior ended up with 251 yards passing and four touchdowns, while his counterpart Zack Mahoney completed 34 more passes, finishing with 43 for the game.

2

Perhaps the most shocking statistic all day was the fact a game with 137 combined points started with two punts. Syracuse got the ball to begin the game and went 39 yards before being forced to punt. Pitt immediately went three-and-out and were also forced to kick it away. The third possession of the game would end with a two-yard touchdown run by Mahoney.
