Report: Blue Jays among teams pushing for Mets' Bruce

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Blue Jays just can't get the thought of Jay Bruce out of their heads.

Toronto is one of several teams reportedly pushing to acquire the outfielder from the New York Mets, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. The other interested parties aren't known.

Bruce nearly found himself in Canada last February when a three-team deal between the Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds - Bruce's employer at the time - and Los Angeles Angels nearly came to fruition. The trade was scuttled at the last moment, however, due to health issues involving a prospect.

Toronto's apparent fascination with Bruce continued into July, when it was reported that the team was still interested in trading for the 29-year-old; a few weeks later, Bruce was dealt to the Mets. Earlier this month it was reported Toronto had already talked with the Mets about a possible deal for Bruce.

Bruce, a three-time All-Star, would fit the Blue Jays' desire to get more left-handed this winter. They've already taken a step towards adding more balance to their predominantly right-handed hitting lineup in signing the switch-hitting Kendrys Morales, and they've reportedly expressed interest in another switch-hitting free agent, outfielder Dexter Fowler.

The reported return of Yoenis Cespedes has left the Mets with a surplus of outfielders from which to deal this winter for help in other areas. In addition to possibly dealing Bruce, the Mets might be open to trading outfielder Curtis Granderson, Newsday's Marc Carig reported Tuesday.
