Report: Dodgers have interest in Rays' Forsythe

The Los Angeles Dodgers, in search of help in the right-handed batters' box, are reportedly interested in Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Logan Forsythe, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Though primarily a second baseman, Forsythe has spent time at multiple infield positions - including 56 games at third base - and his potential versatility could be attractive to the Dodgers. As of now, the team has holes at both second - thanks to the trade of Howie Kendrick and free agent Chase Utley - and third, where incumbent Justin Turner is also testing the free-agent market.

Dodgers president Andrew Friedman also knows Forsythe well, having served as general manager in Tampa Bay for nearly a decade; it was Friedman who brought him to Tropicana Field in 2014, via a trade with the San Diego Padres. With that front-office connection, the Dodgers and Rays have been linked in numerous trade talks over the last several months, with Rays stars like Evan Longoria and Chris Archer being connected to the Hollywood team at various times. Forsythe was also an apparent target of the Dodgers before this year's trade deadline, Morosi and FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported.

Forsythe could help fill a major need for the Dodgers in a right-handed bat who could do damage against left-handed pitching. As a team in 2016, Dodgers hitters struggled versus southpaws, posting a meager .622 OPS and just 37 homers against lefties compared to .772 and 152 big flies versus right-handers.

Last season, Forsythe hit .264/.333/.444 with a career-high 20 homers and added 24 doubles over 567 plate appearances for the Rays. The 29-year-old is set to make $5.75-million in 2017, and the Rays own an $8.5-million club option on his services for the 2018 season.
