Howard ruled out of Costa Rica clash with adductor injury

The United States will be without first-choice shot-stopper Tim Howard for Tuesday's vital World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica, as the veteran has been diagnosed with a right adductor problem.

Howard, 37, sustained the ailment during Friday's 2-1 loss to Mexico, coming off in the opening half after suffering the injury while taking a goal kick.

"He has returned to Colorado for further evaluation and to determine treatment plans," read a brief statement from U.S. Soccer.

His absence will likely open the door for Brad Guzan, who replaced Howard during the aforementioned defeat at MAPFRE Stadium.

While the Americans will fancy their chances to top Los Ticos despite not having the veteran goalkeeper at their disposal, the injury could prove far more detrimental to his club side.

The Colorado Rapids are slated to meet Seattle in the first leg of their Western Conference Final clash on Nov. 22, and the team's medical staff will be kicking things into overdrive in a bid to ensure Howard is fit for the contest.
