Report: FIU TE out for season after pregnant girlfriend burns him with boiling water
Jonnu Smith, a senior tight end for FIU, will miss the rest of the season after suffering multiple burns in an altercation with his pregnant girlfriend, according to David J. Neal of The Miami Herald.
According to the arrest warrant, Smith suffered severe burns to his head, neck, and back, as well as a shoulder and an arm, on Halloween after his girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, poured boiling water on him.
Gaspar, who was five months pregnant at the time, told police they had argued all day over the lack of attention she felt she was receiving from Smith. After Smith's reaction to the pouring of the boiling water wasn't strong enough, she then proceeded to hit him with her hands. She was charged with aggravated battery and released.
The incident marks the end of Smith's college career, and he leaves fifth in Panthers history in receptions (175) and receiving yards (1,936), and third in career touchdown catches (17).
