Rivera to submit another Newton hit for NFL review

The Carolina Panthers are continuing to urge the league to protect quarterback Cam Newton.

Newton appeared to take two shots to the head when sacked in Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, once on an Aaron Donald hit and again by safety Mark Barron.

One week after both Rivera and Newton had private discussions with commissioner Roger Goodell about protecting the quarterback, the Panthers head coach took a less forceful tack Monday.

"It's tough," Rivera said Monday, according to David Newton of ESPN. "It's tough for them to judge things as they happen at full speed and from the angles (and) all that kind of stuff. But there was one of concern, and we'll send it and see what the league has to say and we'll go from there.

"Other than that, I thought they handled it very well. ... So just one of concern, and we'll talk about if they agree or disagree. But for the most part that's just the nature of the game."

Rivera declined to identify which hit the Panthers will request to have reviewed, saying: "I'll leave it at that and discuss it with the league."
