A's get into heated exchange with Smash Mouth on Twitter

Oakland Athletics / Twitter

After outfielder Coco Crisp delivered the deciding blow for the Cleveland Indians in their 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 3 of the World Series, he became the topic of a heated battle of words on social media.

The Twitter account of Crisp's former club, the Oakland Athletics, got into it with the band Smash Mouth, which led to an uncomfortable exchange:

The A's account not only didn't take kindly to being insulted by the pop-rock band, but attacked its relevance, as well as its popular hit song, "All Star," from 1999.

The A's may be onto something. Smash Mouth hasn't produced a record since 2012, and their most recent piece of notoriety came in 2015, thanks to an expletive-laden rant from lead vocalist Steve Harwell in which he threatened to beat up fans at a show in Colorado.

After the war of words, the Athletics deleted their tweets and apologized to the band on Saturday, offering free tickets and a first pitch for their troubles.
