Hull's Dawson targets England national team return

Hull City's fit-again captain Michael Dawson isn't just content with shoring up the Tigers' defence for a relegation battle, and has designs on England's backline.

The defender was sidelined since July with a knee issue, but after his second match back in consideration - a goal-scoring showing in a 2-1 EFL Cup win at Bristol City - manager Mike Phelan revealed Dawson's Three Lions aspirations.

"Michael's played at the highest level and he still wants to play at the highest level," Phelan told PA Sport. "He's a good guy, he's been there and seen it and he knows what it takes to win football matches.

"He does inspire others around him. We've got a few new players in this group and they will realise that a Michael Dawson in your team is a plus."

The 32-year-old has represented England on four occasions, but hasn't turned out for his country since he started a European Championship qualifier against Wales in March 2011.

If Dawson doesn't attract the attentions of national team interim boss Gareth Southgate or his potential successor, England's loss is Hull's gain, and Phelan is hoping his skipper's return can quickly toughen up his back four after a run of torrid results.

"Confidence is a big thing and we have been on the back of a few hidings. A couple of those have come with 10 men, but we have got to be resilient," the former Manchester United assistant manager explained.

"It was important we (went to Bristol City) and showed authority, that we are a Premier League team."
