Coaching Hot Seat Meter: Strong barely survives another week

Kevin Jairaj / USA TODAY Sports

Every week, theScore's Coaching Hot Seat Meter will examine those in danger of losing their jobs in college football. Follow along each week to see which coaches are feeling the heat.

Mark Helfrich - Oregon

Will Oregon ever win another game?

The Ducks have lost five straight and are finding new ways to avoid the win column every week. Helfrich had two weeks to get his defensive issues sorted out and prepare for Cal on Friday night, but still managed to give up 50 points for the third straight game in a double-overtime loss. Oregon's offense has still been able to score points consistently under Helfrich, but the defense has been so bad of late that the Ducks need to score 60 just to have a chance.

Helfrich inherited a great situation when Chip Kelly left for the NFL, though that now seems like a distant memory. Short of winning out, it's hard to imagine any scenario where Helfrich can save his job.

Steve Addazio - Boston College

Can you remember the last time Boston College won a meaningful game?

You have to go all the way back to 2014, when the Eagles knocked off Syracuse. Since then, the only teams Addazio has beaten are Maine, UMass, Howard, Northern Illinois, Wagner, and Buffalo. That's nothing to brag about if you are a Power 5 team, and it's becoming increasingly puzzling how Addazio has held on to his job at this point.

Saturday's loss to the Orange dropped Addazio to 3-4 on the season, 8-20 in conference play, and 20-25 overall. How has no one from Boston College noticed this?

Charlie Strong - Texas

Somehow, someway, Charlie Strong appears to be safe at Texas for at least another week.

The Longhorns fell to 3-4 with a loss to Kansas State on Saturday, marking the the third time in three seasons in Austin that Strong has started a season 3-4. Texas fans weren't used to losing to teams like the Wildcats while Mack Brown was in charge, but have become accustomed to doing so since Strong took over.

The 56-year-old now needs to win three out of his last five games just to become bowl eligible, and it won't be easy, as Texas has upcoming contests against undefeated Baylor and West Virginia over the next three weeks.

The chances of Strong finishing the season as Longhorns head coach are very slim.
