Irsay: Colts could be 6-0 'if the ball bounced our way'

To most, the Indianapolis Colts' rash of defensive injuries, top-heavy roster, inability to close out games, and alarming number of hits taken by Andrew Luck are the most reasonable explanations for the team's 2-4 record.

But to owner Jim Irsay, it's just a couple of bad breaks that are keeping his team from the top of the NFL.

"We could be 6-0 right now if the ball bounced our way," Irsay told USA TODAY's Jarrett Bell this week.

After watching his team squander a 14-point lead Sunday over the Houston Texans - which could've put them first in the division - Irsay was glad to be at the fall league meetings "as a distraction" so he didn't have to focus on Colts' disappointing start.

"You go from first place to last place, just like that," Irsay said. "I’ve got to get my mind off of it"

Many have scrutinized Irsay's decision to give long-term extensions to general manager Ryan Grigson and head coach Chuck Pagano after the two seemed to have a hard time getting along last season. Despite an incomplete roster assembled by Grigson and a series of questionable coaching decision by Pagano resulting in another disappointing start, Irsay isn't ready to call the extensions a mistake.

"When I made the decision in January, it was a long-term decision," Irsay said. "I know we’re under a lot of pressure. But this year isn’t over."
