Watch: Baez thwarts Gonzalez bunt with wicked barehanded play

Kelvin Kuo / USA TODAY Sports

For his next act, Javier Baez will catch a pop fly in his hat.

The Chicago Cubs infielder continued to build his star power with yet another brilliant defensive effort that left Adrian Gonzalez and baseball fans everywhere shaking their heads in disbelief.

Gonzalez tried to push a bunt into an open hole between first and second, and appeared to have himself a base hit - until Baez came flying in from deep in the hole and made a barehanded snag before firing to first in one motion to nab the slower Gonzalez by half a step. Though he was initially called safe, the play was overturned on review.

Baez's exchange on the play - from picking up the ball to throwing it to first - was 0.57 seconds, according to MLB.com's Daren Willman.
