Report: Jets' Smith believed to have torn ACL

Geno Smith's season may be coming to an early end.

The New York Jets quarterback was forced to the sidelines in the second quarter of Sunday's win over the Baltimore Ravens, and the belief after an MRI is that he suffered a torn ACL, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

It's an unfortunate break for the former second-round pick, as he'd just been given the nod for his first start since 2014 in place of an ineffective Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Smith will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews set for Tuesday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Confirmation of the diagnosis would almost certainly send him to injured reserve and potentially require a lengthy recovery.

Fantasy Fallout: Ryan Fitzpatrick back in as NYJ starter with Geno Smith injured

New York will presumably turn back to Fitzpatrick as its starter in the short term, with both Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg representing options for the team to evaluate with an eye on the future.

Smith, meanwhile, will look ahead to his first opportunity to test the free-agent market in March. If healthy, there should be other teams interested in giving him a chance to catch on as a backup and make the most of a fresh start.
