Athletics hire Hale as 3rd base coach

The Oakland Athletics announced Tuesday the hiring of Chip Hale as third base coach.

Hale was fired Oct. 3 by the Arizona Diamondbacks after two seasons as their manager. He returns to Oakland, where he was bench coach in 2012.

Athletics general manager David Forst said the remainder of the coaching staff will be back.

"(Manager) Bob (Melvin) and his staff have done an outstanding job with our core group of young players, and keeping them together was an important step for us as we look towards 2017," Forst added. "Under Bob's leadership, we're confident that we have the right staff in place to continue our club's growth and development."

Last season, the Athletics were the laughingstock of the American League West Division, losing 93 games, the third-worst record in the AL.
