Tottenham will be sweating over the fitness of imperious central defender Toby Alderweireld, as the Belgian needed the assistance of a stretcher to leave Saturday's 1-1 draw against West Brom.

Alderweireld, 27, was in visible agony after he and teammate Jan Vertonghen collided, the former appearing to clutch his knee before being replaced by Eric Dier.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino was coy with the details after the contest, however, saying: "He has an injury to his leg. It's difficult to assess now though, we need to wait."

The imposing Belgian, who has started every Premier League match since joining Spurs from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, has helped turn Tottenham into a defensive juggernaut during his time at White Hart Lane.

Should he miss an extended period of time with the ailment, Pochettino could opt to use Dier alongside Vertonghen once again, or turn to Kevin Wimmer in a bid to continue utilising the Englishman in central midfield.

Tottenham, sitting third in the Premier League - one point adrift of joint-leaders Manchester City and Arsenal - is staring down the barrel at a jam-packed fixture list, and will no doubt be hoping Alderweireld is able to return from Saturday's ailment in short order.
