Iaquinta tweets out retirement news
"Raging Al" announced his retirement in an understated manner on Wednesday.
Responding to a tweet from Chael Sonnen, lightweight contender Al Iaquinta appeared to declare that he was done with fighting with a simple one-word, one-emoji response:
@ChaelSonnen @MoTownPhenom @BrianStann retired ✌🏼️
— Al Iaquinta (@ALIAQUINTA) October 12, 2016
Should Iaquinta stand by this statement, it would come as little surprise given his recent contract issues with the UFC. In September, the 29-year-old fighter explained that he has had to pursue business ventures outside of the UFC to support his family. He also said that the company's Reebok deal killed his ability to profit from sponsors and that officials made unreasonable demands of his time.
Iaquinta was booked to fight Thiago Alves at UFC 205 in his home state of New York, but he removed himself from the bout pending a renegotiation of his contract. He has not competed since a split decision win over Jorge Masvidal in April 2015. That victory improved his UFC record to 7-2.
