Jones calls beer throw as 'pathetic as it gets'
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones claimed fans at the Rogers Centre shouted racial slurs at both him and Korean left fielder Hyun Soo Kim during their wild-card game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Jones was irate in the seventh inning after a fan threw a beer can at Kim as he attempted to catch a fly ball.
"We're horrible, we get it, we're the opponent, we completely understand that but to throw something at a player, that's just as pathetic as it gets," Jones told reporters.
When asked if there were racial slurs coming from the stands, Jones responded by saying:
"I've heard that so much playing baseball. I don't even care, call me what you want. You hear everything, we can hear everything - people cussing, flipping you off. I get it."
Jones added that he hopes charges are pressed against the fan who threw the beer can.
"To put us in harm's way when all we are doing is focusing on baseball, that's just not part of the game," he said.
This isn't the first time the situation has occurred at Rogers Centre, as a fan also did it to Nate McLouth in 2013. Fans also threw bottles onto the field during the 2015 ALDS against the Texas Rangers.
While the can didn't hit Kim, MLB rules state that if a spectator interferes with any thrown or batted ball, the ball is dead at the moment of interference and the umpires shall impose whatever penalties they deem fit.
