Simmons undergoes foot surgery, no timetable for return

Philadelphia 76ers rookie forward Ben Simmons underwent surgery to repair an acute Jones fracture in his right foot on Tuesday. No timetable for his return to basketball activity was given.

Simmons suffered the injury when he landed on another player's foot during a Sept. 30 scrimmage. It's yet another stroke of bad luck involving a Sixers No. 1 pick, with Joel Embiid having missed the entirety of his first two NBA seasons, and Nerlens Noel sitting out his 2013-14 rookie campaign, both due to injuries.

Reports surfaced Monday that Simmons' agent Rich Paul wants to shut the Australian down for this season as well. The 76ers' statement said Simmons' recovery timetable would be "provided as available and when appropriate."

Simmons was selected first overall in June's draft, the consensus prize of this year's rookies, after the 76ers organization had spent the last four seasons bottoming out in an effort to accumulate the best draft talent available.

Simmons' surgery comes on the same day Embiid will make his NBA debut for the 76ers with a 12-minute limit in a preseason game against the Boston Celtics.
