Tennessee Titans wide receiver Andre Johnson told teammates in a meeting Monday morning that he intends to retire from the NFL, the team announced.

The seven-time Pro Bowler will retire effective immediately, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"Going back to his days at the University of Miami, Andre was one of the most impressive wide receivers I’ve scouted," Titans general manager Jon Robinson said in a statement. "He had a professional approach to the game both on and off the field and in my opinion is one of the best to have played the game."

Johnson spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Houston Texans after the club took him third overall in the 2003 NFL Draft.

He quickly became one of the league's most dominant offensive players, excelling despite never playing with a bonafide star at quarterback.

The 35-year-old peaked from 2008-10, collecting 302 catches for 4,360 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns. He ends his career as the Texans' all-time leader in nearly every receiving stat.

Johnson's retirement comes just a week after Arian Foster announced his decision to hang up his cleats midseason. The two played together in Houston for six seasons, and are arguably two of the young franchise's three greatest players, alongside J.J. Watt.

After his 12 seasons in Houston, Johnson opted to stay in the AFC South. He spent one year with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, but was not the same dominant player, recording 503 yards on 41 catches.

Johnson joined the Titans late this past offseason, but his snaps decreased as the season wore on, and he had no catches in the last three games.

The question now becomes whether Johnson is worthy of the Hall of Fame. His numbers indicate he's a strong candidate, as he ends his career 10th all time in receiving yards (14,185), ninth in receptions (1,062), and 15th in receiving yards per game (73.5).
