4 things that happened in Georgia Tech's awful 1st half

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Through 30 minutes of action Thursday, Georgia Tech is getting absolutely hammered by Clemson.

With the fifth-ranked Tigers having lost their last five games at Georgia Tech, many pundits were picking the Yellow Jackets to score the upset.

Through one half of play that looks highly unlikely. Here are the craziest four things that happened in a dismal first half for Georgia Tech:

Clemson scores as many points as Georgia Tech has yards

Georgia Tech had the ball on offense six times in the opening frame against Clemson, and ran just 21 plays for an embarrassing 23 total yards. The Tigers ran up a ridiculous 347 yards on offense, giving them an insane 325-yard difference in production after just 30 minutes. They also scored 23 points, which matched the yardage total for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech runs 21 plays, Clemson gains 19 first downs

Clemson almost finished the first half with as many first downs as Georgia Tech ran plays. The Tigers' offense rolled to 19 first downs in the first 30 minutes of action, while the Yellow Jackets managed just 21 plays on offense.

Deshaun Watson averaged more yards per pass than Georgia Tech had total

Deshaun Watson averaged 7.5 yards per pass during the opening frame, finishing with a very impressive 262 yards and two touchdowns. Yellow Jackets quarterback Justin Thomas completed two passes, yet somehow ended up with minus-3 yards passing total. Georgia Tech certainly isn't a pass-happy team, but to complete two passes and finish with negative yards is a very difficult feat to achieve.

Georgia Tech fell victim to one of the weirdest safeties ever

Georgia Tech finally had something go right when Lance Austin intercepted Watson on the goal line, only to have it fail spectacularly just seconds later. As Austin attempted to return the interception for added yardage, he had the ball knocked out of his hand by a teammate, forcing the Yellow Jackets to concede a safety in the end zone. Clemson would take the ensuing possession the length of the field to run the halftime score up to 23-0.
