Watch: Rays go back-to-back-to-back off Tanaka in 4-HR inning

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka may have blown his shot at the 2016 American League Cy Young over the course of a few minutes Wednesday night in Tampa Bay.

Tanaka led the American League in ERA heading into the Tropicana Field start, but quickly lost that distinction in the third inning when he allowed four home runs to the Tampa Bay Rays - a leadoff bomb from Bobby Wilson, and then back-to-back-to-back, two-out shots from Evan Longoria, Brad Miller, and Corey Dickerson.

Prior to Wednesday's outing, the 27-year-old right-hander - owner of a 3.09 ERA in 74 starts career with New York - had never allowed more than three homers in a game, let alone one inning.

For Tampa Bay, the third-inning outburst marked the first time in its 19-year history with four homers in one inning, though it had ripped back-to-back-to-back jacks twice before.
