New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz is dealing with shoulder soreness and will not pitch as scheduled Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team announced.

General Manager Sandy Alderson told the New York Post's Joel Sherman that surgery wasn't indicated, but given the fact that there are so few games left, he's unlikely to start again this season.

Matz was scratched from his Friday start after feeling soreness following a regular throwing session.

The 25-year-old hasn't pitched since Aug. 14, when he threw 7 1/3 shutout innings. This season he owns a 3.40 ERA over 132 1/3 innings of work.
