3 things you need to know about USA vs. Czech Republic

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

The United States and the Czech Republic, both eliminated from playoff action, will play for pride Thursday when they close out the World Cup of Hockey's round-robin action.

Here are three things you need to know about the game:

Possible change between the pipes

While he's not to blame for every goal, Team USA's Jonathan Quick owns the World Cup's worst save percentage (.863), having allowed seven goals in two games.

Given his two Stanley Cup rings, it was fair to stick with Quick when the pressure was on. But with nothing on the line, there's no reason not to give a look to either Ben Bishop or Cory Schneider.

The World Cup's best trio of goalies has been underutilized by coach John Tortorella.

Due for a win

Much like the Americans, the Czech Republic hasn't found the win column at the World Cup, though it was close in a 3-2 overtime loss to Team Europe.

After a blowout loss to Canada in its first game, the Czech Republic went with goalie Petr Mrazek in Game 2. At the other end of the rink, only two Czechs, Jakub Voracek and Martin Hanzal, have found the back of the net.

The good news for the team: After Team USA was eliminated at the Sochi Olympics in 2014, the Americans put in a lifeless effort in the following bronze medal match, falling 5-0 to Finland. A similar effort could make for an easy night for the Czechs.

One last audition

While it's not yet known when we'll see the next reincarnation of Team USA, it's never too early for players to show their stuff ahead of time. A strong performance in the closing match could leave a lasting impression.

Of the 20 American skaters, only six have recorded at least a point through two games. Namely, T.J. Oshie, Joe Pavelski, Patrick Kane, James van Riemsdyk, Derek Stepan, and Ryan McDonagh. In other words, 14 skaters have been held pointless. The final game is as good as any to find the scoresheet.
