Here are the fantasy implications following the news that Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart will miss Week 3 and possibly longer.

At 30 years old and having played no more than 13 games in a season since the 2012 season, Stewart has been an injury concern the past few years. To start this season, Stewart had been dealing with an ankle injury that was limiting him during practices. Now, he's suffering from a hamstring issue that will withhold him for at least a week.

Though the severity of the injury isn't dire, it is concerning. Stewart owners will have to stow him on the bench until his return and look for a replacement in Week 3 and possibly into Week 4. Stewart's health for the rest of the season needs to be monitored closely, as well.

After Stewart was removed in the first quarter Sunday, the Panthers handed the rock primarily to Fozzy Whittaker, who amassed 100 yards on 16 carries. As a result, Whittaker should be viewed as the in-house replacement going forward. It is worth noting, though, RB Cameron Artis-Payne was inactive for Week 2 but should draw into Week 3's roster and serve as the chief backup.

The main detraction for both players, however, will be the presence of Cam Newton and Mike Tolbert. Newton and Tolbert should handle most of the short-yardage and goal-line work, significantly capping both Artis-Payne's and Whittaker's upside. A Week 3 matchup against Minnesota also won't make either option overly tempting.

Waiver Wire Targets

  • Tevin Coleman, Atlanta Falcons: Coleman is making the Atlanta backfield look more like a RBBC each week. Against Oakland, Coleman tallied 12 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. A Week 3 matchup against New Orleans also projects well for another score from Atlanta's third-round pick in 2015. Coleman is owned in just over 50 percent of leagues.
    FAAB Bid: 10-20%
  • Fozzy Whittaker, Panthers: As mentioned, Whittaker is likely going to handle the bulk of the work in Carolina. The Panthers lead the league in Rush Attempts (69), so Whittaker should be in line for 15-20 touches. Given his 2015 YPC of 5.9 and career YPC of 4.3, a projection of 85 rushing yards seems fair. Failing to score a touchdown, however, would tarnish his value.
    FAAB Bid: 8-13%
  • Jerick McKinnon, Minnesota Vikings: With Adrian Peterson possibly suffering a significant knee injury, McKinnon is going to be this week's top waiver wire addition. Consequently, he'll require a high FAAB bid in order to attain his services, so if you're simply looking for a temporary replacement, McKinnon is not the guy for you. The undersized pass-catcher totaled 444 yards on 73 touches last season.
    FAAB Bid: 25-35%
