Report: J.R. Smith plans to skip Cavs' minicamp

J.R. Smith's contract standoff with the Cleveland Cavaliers doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon.

With both sides still far apart on a new deal, the free-agent shooting guard is planning to skip the Cavaliers' minicamp this week in California, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports.

Smith's agent, Rich Paul, has been at an impasse with Cleveland's management since July as he continues to look for a multi-year deal for his client. There has reportedly been no recent progress between the two sides.

Cleveland is already $20 million over the salary cap for next season, and is reportedly unwilling to pay Smith more money than the market dictates.

The Cavaliers were in a similar situation last season, when Tristan Thompson - another Rich Paul client - missed the entire preseason prior to signing a lucrative, multi-year deal.

Smith averaged 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists for the Cavaliers last season, playing a key role in the team's championship run.
