Real Madrid ties Barcelona's La Liga record with 16th consecutive win

A routine 2-0 victory over Espanyol on Sunday marked Real Madrid's 16th consecutive win in La Liga action, tying a benchmark set by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in 2010-11.

The winning streak is also a club record for Los Blancos, who previously went on a 15-game run in 1960-61.

That team boasted the likes of Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano, two Madrid legends who combined to win three European Cups.

Zinedine Zidane's side has left a trail of dead in its wake since March. A 3-1 result over soon-to-be-relegated Levante set the streak in motion, with further scalps coming against Sevilla, Barcelona, Villarreal, and Valencia toward the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

Madrid picked up right where it left off at the start of the new season. Scoring 12 goals and conceding just three, it's amassed 12 points out of a possible 12 in league play.

Sunday's victory only needed one third of the famous BBC front line to come to fruition. With Gareth Bale (hip) and Cristiano Ronaldo (illness) missing the contest, it was James Rodriguez - making his first start in 133 days - and Karim Benzema who found the net.

Madrid's past 11 La Liga goals have now been scored by different players, showing the balance of the current Champions League holder.
