Bowles backs Revis amid struggles: 'He'll be better'

Todd Bowles isn't losing confidence in his perennial All-Pro corner just yet.

Following a second consecutive performance in which Darrelle Revis was victimized by the opposing offense in coverage, the New York Jets head coach downplayed any concerns about a steep dropoff in ability.

"He gave up two plays," Bowles said Friday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. "I mean, I don't think that'll be an indication of the whole season. He gave up two plays. He knows he doesn't want to give them up and we know we don't want him to give them up.

"We've got to correct them. He'll be better and we'll move on from there."

Revis was beat by A.J. Green multiple occasions to open the season last week, allowing the Cincinnati Bengals star wideout to finish with 12 catches for 180 yards and one touchdown.

The damage in Thursday night's win over the Buffalo Bills came against a lesser-known talent, as Marquise Goodwin flew by the veteran defensive back to haul in an 84-yard score from Tyrod Taylor.

New York maintaining confidence in the seven-time Pro Bowler is to be expected. The 31-year-old has long earned himself consideration as one of the best defensive backs to play the game, and he continued to play at a relatively high level last season.

Should he struggle to rebound in the coming weeks, though, there will continue to be less of a case to be made against the idea that "Revis Island" is a thing of the past.

Next up for the Jets is a road date with the Kansas City Chiefs, where Jeremy Maclin will provide yet another stiff test for Revis and the rest of the Jets' secondary.
