Terry out 10 days with foot injury; Luiz in line to start vs. Liverpool

Chelsea captain John Terry has been ruled out "approximately 10 days," as the Blues announced Tuesday the defender suffered strained ligaments in his foot during the weekend clash with Swansea.

The injury means Terry, 35, will miss Friday's match against Liverpool, which could open the door for David Luiz to get the nod in central defence for the first time since his move back to Stamford Bridge on deadline day.

Both the eccentric Brazilian and fellow summer signing Marcos Alonso were unused substitutes against the Swans, though Terry's ailment could see either player earn their first appearance of the year. While primarily a left-back, Alonso would also be able to slot into the middle if necessary.

The timeline suggests Terry will be in a race against the clock to recover for the Sept. 24 contest with Arsenal.

"Absolutely gutted, but will be giving everything to get back playing," Terry wrote on Instagram.

On the bright side for Antonio Conte, ESPN FC reports that Gary Cahill will not face any discipline for his comments directed at Andre Marriner after the 2-2 draw at Liberty Stadium, which will, at the very least, not exacerbate the central-defensive shortage.

Cahill, clearly fouled in the build-up to Swansea's second goal, was fuming after the final whistle, tweeting out a clip of the incident that saw Leroy Fer clip his ankles before stealing the ball and racing in to score.

"You could be sat on the moon and see it's a clear foul," the defender added.
