It remains one of the most emotional first pitches in baseball history.

Though watching its team in the World Series, New York City was still reeling from the horrific events that had occurred some 49 days prior.

With the city recovering from the Sept. 11 terror attacks, former President George Bush was invited on Oct. 30 to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium for Game 3 of the Fall Classic between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees. Despite the overwhelming pressure of the moment, Bush still managed to throw a breaking ball from the mound for a picture-perfect strike, eliciting a tremendous reception from the home crowd.

New York went on to win the game 2-1, though Arizona took the series in seven games.

On Sunday, the 15th anniversary of the tragedy, Yankee Stadium will undoubtedly be the scene of a powerful moment once again, as New York plays host to the Tampa Bay Rays. A win for the Yankees could see them move into a tie for the second wild card spot in the American League.
