Miami Heat shooting guard Josh Richardson suffered a partially torn MCL in his right knee during a workout Friday, league sources told The Vertical's Shams Charania.

He is expected to miss part of training camp, but the Heat are optimistic the 22-year-old won't lose time beyond that, according to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Richardson sustained the injury while landing awkwardly following a dunk attempt, The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports.

The 6-foot-6 shooting guard improved dramatically during the second half of his rookie campaign, averaging 10.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists following the All-Star break, while shooting 53.3 percent from 3-point range. He also played a valuable role in Miami's postseason run, averaging 6.6 points and shooting 37 percent from deep.

With Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson, and Luol Deng all departing this offseason, the Heat are likely relying on Richardson to take a big step in 2016-17. With few proven 3-point shooters on the roster, Miami's offense could struggle with spacing should he miss a large chunk of the season.
