Lions, Riddick agree to reported 3-year, $12.75M extension

The Detroit Lions announced the signing of running back Theo Riddick to a new contract extension Friday.

The Lions didn't disclose the length and terms of the deal, but a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Riddick signed a three-year extension worth $12.75 million.

The deal cements Riddick's place as a key component in the Lions' offense.

The 25-year-old former sixth-round pick caught 80 passes last season, NFL-best among running backs, taking those catches for 697 yards and three touchdowns. He added 133 yards rushing.

The Lions spent a 2015 second-round pick on running back Ameer Abdullah, but don't appear interested in using him as a workhorse. Instead, it appears the team will continue to make full use of Riddick's talents in the receiving game.
