Sami Khedira is standing up for his compatriot.

The German midfielder, following in the footsteps of fellow international teammates, says he's disappointed by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho's treatment of Bastian Schweinsteiger this season.

The divisive manager has frozen Schweinsteiger out of the first team, the veteran yet to play a minute in the Premier League this season. He was also left off the Red Devils' Europa League squad.

Mourinho has made it abundantly clear he doesn't require the services of the ageing midfielder, who endured an injury-riddled campaign last season.

Khedira's battled significant injury issues in his own career and worked under Mourinho while the two were at Real Madrid. While he notes that the manager has the final say, the situation doesn't sit quite right with him.

"You have to accept it if Jose Mourinho has other plans," Khedira told Die Welt about his former Germany teammate. He added, "The overall situation is a shame, because Bastian is (a) player I've looked up to. ...

"On the other hand you have to understand the club. Football is business."

The Juventus star added, "I don't want to get into a situation where a club asks me to go. A player with a great career does not deserve to be told to just leave."
