SEC Trainwreck: Ranking the worst performances from Week 1

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

It was not a pretty first week of the 2016 season for the SEC.

For a conference that often refers to itself as the nation's best, the performances from the members in action Saturday left a great deal to be desired.

Though defending national champion Alabama was its usual dominant self against USC, and Georgia appeared strong versus UNC, the majority of the conference looked horrendous.

Here are the four worst results from the SEC from Saturday.

LSU loses to Wisconsin at Lambeau Field

Losing to Wisconsin at Lambeau Field isn't the worst result in the world, but the way No. 5 LSU went down Saturday is deflating for any Tigers fan. The same methods that led to Les Miles almost being fired during last season's final game against Texas A&M resurfaced. Brandon Harris struggled yet again, throwing two interceptions, and the Tigers managed just 131 yards passing. Leonard Fournette was himself, ripping off 138 yards rushing, but having him in the offense right now is like putting a Corvette engine in a Dodge Neon.

Mississippi State loses to South Alabama at home

Dan Mullen is texting Dak Prescott tonight, asking his former star quarterback to please come home to Starkville. Mississippi State's first game without the Dallas Cowboys pivot ended in disaster when kicker Westin Graves clanged a 28-yard field goal off the upright as time expired, giving South Alabama its first-ever win over an SEC school.

Arkansas escapes with 1-point win over Louisiana Tech

Arkansas entered its home game versus Louisiana Tech as a 20.5-point favorite, but that was not what played out on the field Saturday. The Bulldogs more then held their own, and the Razorbacks needed a Jeremy Spinkle touchdown with 6:37 remaining to escape with the win.

Kentucky blows 25-point lead in loss to Southern Mississippi

When Jojo Kemp rumbled in a 7-yard touchdown with 1:09 to play in the first half, he gave Kentucky a 35-10 lead against Southern Mississippi. From that point on, the Golden Eagles scored 34 unanswered to take home the win 44-35. Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops fired offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson after the 2015 campaign, only to see him hired by Southern Mississippi in the same role. His former colleague hung 554 total yards on his ex-employer in what must have been a satisfying win.
