Kaepernick continues boycott of national anthem

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick continued his protest during the national anthem ahead of Thursday's preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.

Teammate Eric Reid, who isn't playing in Thursday's game, sat beside Kaepernick during the anthem and several teammates showed their support by hugging the quarterback prior to kickoff.

Kaepernick was booed during pregame warmups and was subject to "profanity and obscene gestures" from Leo Uzcategui, a Navy veteran and Chargers fan, The Associated Press reports.

''I was in the Navy and I saw men and women bleed and die for this flag,'' Uzcategui said. ''If he wants to do something, go to some outreach program where he can do some good. And I get it, his First Amendment right. But you don't sit during the presenting of the colors, and you don't sit during the national anthem. That is not the way to do it.''

The Chargers went all out during the pregame ceremonies as it is their "Salute to Military" night.

Prior to the anthem, Kaepernick was seen standing with former Green Beret and Seattle Seahawks long snapper Nate Boyer, who supports the quarterback's right to protest.

Kaepernick is protesting the treatment of African Americans in the United States, and particularly the disproportionate number of blacks killed by police officers throughout the nation.
