Report: UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to retire soon

One of the driving forces behind the world's biggest fight promotion is set to walk away from the sport.

Following the UFC's recent sale to WME-IMG, longtime matchmaker Joe Silva is planning his retirement after 21 years with the organization, according to multiple sources.

The departure is believed to stem from Silva's enormous profit from the sale, as opposed to any issues with the new owners or the current direction of the promotion.

Silva's relationship with the UFC dates back to 2001, before it was purchased by the Fertitta brothers and Dana White. Until 2010 - when WEC matchmaker Sean Shelby was integrated into UFC - Silva was recognized as the primary-decision maker when it came to booking matchups.

Upon joining the UFC, Shelby took over responsibilities for the 145-pound weight class and below, as well as the women's divisions. Presumably, he will become the primary matchmaker following Silva's departure.
