Klinsmann calls up Kljestan for USMNT's World Cup qualifiers

The door on Sacha Kljestan's international career isn't closed just yet.

On Monday, Jurgen Klinsmann called up Kljestan to the United States men's national team for its two 2018 World Cup qualifiers in September, adding the midfielder to the squad to replace John Brooks, who is suffering from back issues.

Kljestan, 30, is enjoying a fine Major League Soccer season with the New York Red Bulls, boasting five goals and a league-best 15 assists in 26 appearances as the energy-drink club sits third in the Eastern Conference.

At the international level, he last represented the USMNT in 2014, taking the pitch in its 2-0 friendly defeat to Ukraine. He holds 46 caps to his name and was part for the national team's preliminary squad for the 2010 World Cup. A return to international duty looked unlikely, after he was omitted from last year's Copa America and this year's Copa America Centenario, but his form with the Red Bulls clearly caught Klinsmann's eye.

The USMNT will play away to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Sept. 2 before hosting Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 6. The pair of fixtures mark the last two matches for Klinsmann's side in the fourth round of 2018 World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF.
