Colts' Mewhort avoids significant knee injury, out 2-4 weeks

Indianapolis Colts guard Jack Mewhort won't require surgery after suffering a knee injury in Saturday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, owner Jim Irsay announced Sunday.

Initial reports suggested the Colts feared a torn ACL for the third-year lineman, but Irsay's update indicates Mewhort will only miss two-to-four weeks of action.

Avoiding a season-ending injury, and potentially missing just a few games to start the year, is a major break for both player and team.

Mewhort, a second-round pick in 2014, has settled into a key role on the interior offensive front. His presence between left tackle Anthony Castonzo and first-round rookie center Ryan Kelly gives the Colts a strong left side.

The offensive line, of course, remains an area of the utmost importance, as Indianapolis looks to better protect franchise quarterback Andrew Luck and find some sort of running game.
