Report: Baylor's Blanchard to miss opener after knee surgery

Jerome Miron / USA TODAY Sports

Baylor defensive back Travon Blanchard will miss the season opener after undergoing surgery to repair a minor meniscus tear, according to John Werner of the Waco Tribune.

It's possible Blanchard's absence could extend beyond the season's first game, but that will depend on how quickly he recovers. Head coach Jim Grobe previously acknowledged the injury, but wasn't sure how much time it would cost the junior.

Blanchard racked up 83 tackles and two interceptions last season, and serves as the Bears' primary nickelback.

Baylor squares off against Northwestern State in the Sept. 2 season opener.
