Kershaw, Ellis cry together after trade news

For the last five years, it's been the A.J. Ellis and Clayton Kershaw show in Los Angeles.

But the duo was broken up Thursday when the Dodgers traded Ellis to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for another backup catcher, Carlos Ruiz.

When Ellis and Kershaw found out, Ellis said the left-hander was "shocked," and the two men cried together, according to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times.

Back in February, Ellis spoke highly of Kershaw and the honor of catching one of the best pitchers in the game for the last decade.

"To be a part of that is something that is a thrill for me, and I will relish and cherish every opportunity I can to be out there for him," Ellis said at the time. "I think we have a good relationship and we really work well together, although he probably doesn’t need me back there because he can probably throw to you behind the plate.

"But there are those games, those situations, where he’s told me that I make a difference and that’s what makes our partnership work so well."

In 2015, Ellis caught 21 of Kershaw’s 33 starts. The left-hander held opponents to a .204 batting average and .251 on-base percentage in those games while recording a 6.55 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
