Harbaugh: Pitta's broken finger 'ridiculous'

No coach is a proponent of fighting in training camp, but when a player is lost to injury in a scuffle, it really hits a nerve.

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced on Monday that tight end Dennis Pitta suffered a broken finger in a fight with rookie linebacker Kamalei Correa on August 2.

The Ravens had initially thought the injury was minor and would only remove Pitta from a few days of practice, but Harbaugh says its become more concerning and voiced his frustration with the nature of the loss.

"It's absurd to be honest with you that it happened," Harbaugh told reporters. "It's a break in the finger ... and they're afraid if he takes a hit again, then he may have to put a screw in it.

"I want to get him timed up with Joe (Flacco), but he really can't catch right now and he definitely can't get his finger banged up. It's ridiculous. It's sad. I'm disappointed about it."

Pitta was in the process of coming back from a career-threatening hip injury that saw him miss the entire 2015 season.

The Ravens did not provide a timetable for his return and will likely bring him along slowly with three other capable tight ends on the roster.
